Haiku + Senryu

Haiku is a seasonal, reverent celebration of a subject (nature or people) trying to make a feeling.
Senryu tends to have a victim and may be humorous or irreverant trying to make a point.
- paraphrased from Michael Dylan Welch's Graceguts

Still More in the Spirit of Masaoka Shiki...

Skies may be grumbling
Winds may be wild and frantic
But your church beams light

And your church beams light
Beyond the last rays of day
Like a neon sign

NOTE
The reference to church in these haiku intends to suggest that sacred place within
as much as the sacred bricks and mortar that may be needed in physical realms.

Wolf Moon

Midsummer moonlight
Like a heart beat on night winds
A perfect round pearl

And the wolf moon calls
Save your soul from frozen lands
Unchain your music

Silk

Main Street, Mornington markets are held each Wednesday.
These are the longest running street markets in Victoria, Australia - about 30 years.
The market is dedicated to Australian designed and made products.
Often, street musicians contribute to the atmosphere - from drums to violin.

Heath

Heath on the Rosebud foreshore by Port Phillip Bay on the Mornington Peninsula

Ravaged by salt winds
Deprived of gifts from rich soils
Blinded by hot suns

Stands up to hot suns
Clings to the hope of pale sands
Heath on the foreshore

Bamboo

View of Melbourne across the Yarra River

It's bamboo city
And the sugar cane grows tall
Seasonal harvest

NOTE
Are bamboo and sugar cane related?
Yes. They're about as close as humans are to orangutans, or domestic cats to leopards: same family, different subfamilies. Both are members of the grass family (Poaceae). Bamboos comprise the tribe Bambuseae in the subfamily Bambusoideae; sugar cane makes up the genus Saccharum in the subfamily Andropogoneae.

The Baby Panda Bamboo (Pogonatherum paniceum) is an interesting grass from the rainforests of south-east Asia. It is like a dwarf bamboo but is not a true bamboo and is more closely related to sugar cane. It can be used as a pot plant inside well-lit houses, balconies or as an interesting feature plant around ponds, steps or bordering gardens. It likes lots of moisture and will take filtered light to full sun.

MORE NOTES
The poem, on the surface, is about the bamboo and sugar cane connection.
But behind the idyllic description lurks the expression "bamboo city".
For me, the city is like alluring bamboo pan pipes, like sweet opportunities to make a fortune.
The sugar cane = skyscrapers growing tall, like reaching for that elusive wealth.
The last line is a final, wry comment.
Fortunes may be made, but like the fickle stockmarket, like the changing seasons, fortunes change and fall.
But these are just my thoughts behind the reason for the haiku.
(Like an extended metaphor perhaps!)
If they are not there for you, they are not there.

Love story...

1. Muscovy duck (with the pink face) has been alone for a long time in the small Dromana wetlands on Boundary Road.
But a few days ago, I saw a new white duck.
And Muscovy had eyes in just one direction!

Love story unfolds
Timeless feeling of closeness
Feathers together

2. And the love story below has been unfolding for quite some time.
The guy (cockatoo) on the right has a broken wing, and yet he manages to fly.
But he can't get his wing back into its usual place.
It looks quite low in this photo.
However, in the last few months he has had a constant companion.

I am here to groom
I am here to fly with you
Be my love story

Crocus

So often regarded as a herald of spring, Crocus is a member of the iris (Iridaceae) family, and is made up of around 80 species of late winter- and early springflowering corms. Their natural distribution range extends from central Europe to northern Africa and central Asia.
Ref: ABC Gardening Australia
These are some of my photos of irises.
I live in the south east of Australia and I have never seen a crocus, but I have seen many varieties of irises.
Apparently the crocus grow well in partial sunlight in rockeries.

In some northern lands
Of magical winter snows
Crocus break the spell

But in my warm climes
The crocus is like a dream
Small distant cousin

Ember

Beyond the webbed grate
Yesterday's flames leap and burn
Now fickle embers

One ember burns bright
Like some wild scalding summer
Too hot for the soul
