Haiku + Senryu

Haiku is a seasonal, reverent celebration of a subject (nature or people) trying to make a feeling.
Senryu tends to have a victim and may be humorous or irreverant trying to make a point.
- paraphrased from Michael Dylan Welch's Graceguts

NOTE
The above photo is a section of the wondrous rugged coastline of London Bridge Ocean Beach on the southern end of the Mornington Peninsula.
The coastline is festooned with mini mountains, valleys, waterfalls (when the tide rushes in) and fascinating rock pools.

Volcano

Scottish Arthurs Seat
extinct volcano system
shaped by glaciers

my Arthurs Seat world
soars above Port Phillip Bay
close to a fault line

NOTE
There is an Arthurs Seat in Scotland.
It has a volcanic heritage.
My Arthurs Seat mountain is on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria, Australia.
It does not have a volcanic heritage.
It was named by Acting Lieutenant John Murray when he entered Port Phillip Bay in the ship Lady Nelson in February 1802.
Murray thought that it resembled the hill of Arthur's Seat in Edinburgh (which was his home city).
My Arthurs Seat mountain is close to the Selwyn fault line running along the ridge of the peninsula.
The photo above is a view from my Arthurs Seat of the bay, looking down on Dromana.

while vines are sleeping...

while vines are sleeping
cooling skies and lonely art
exchange their sad sighs

NOTE
Montalto Vineyard, on the Mornington Peninsula near Red Hill, pictured above, has many unusual  artworks scattered through the vineyards.
Somehow in the Autumn/Winter season, those artworks seem quite stark - with the leafless vines as a backdrop.

Rosemary

Sea mist envelops London Bridge Ocean Beach at Portsea on the Mornington Peninsula

when sea mists drift in
do you yearn for distant lands
lady rosemary

NOTE
Rosemary is from a combination of 2 Latin words
(ros = dew + marinus = sea) which together mean dew of the sea.
Rosemary is a plant native to the seaside regions of the Mediterranean and North Africa.

Pariah

do you feel unloved
pariah of feathered worlds
do you crave some love

NOTE
In my peninsula world, the crow is chased away by kookaburras, magpies and even little wattle birds.
It is not only we humans who feel that the crow is far from acceptable to our psyche.
Many link the crow with death and sorcery.
And yet, legends suggest that the crow as a totem, could be the key to life's mysteries and the potential of energies within.

Nightingale

butcher bird songsters
piping loud their magic flutes
like dawn nightingales

NOTE
Butcher bird territory spreads across mainland Australia.
The one pictured above is a youngster (photographed on my verandah rail).
All those brown tones will darken to black.
Their song impressed Olivier Messiaen, who incorporated pied butcherbird song into his last work,
Éclairs sur l’au-delà.
More detail about the butcher bird and their musical range of song is HERE
(scroll down to just above the WARNING ad for their swooping habits!)

The inside curtain folds acted a great backing contrast for photographing him.
(He was about 2 hand lengths)

Eggshells

Blissful cockatoo
Feasts on liquid amber fruits
Like cracking eggshells

NOTE
This is a feature of our Autumn on the Mornington Peninsula.
Waves of cockatoos invade the Autumn liquid amber tree to snap, crackle and pop the conkers and make a decidedly nauseating mess.
Their dining manners are not really up to scratch.
